Learning Division
Division is a process which kids often find quite difficult to learn. Kids need to learn what division is before they start formal work on dividing numbers.
Sharing things out such as counters, between pretend people, is a great way to start your child on their division journey, so that they have a basic understanding of what division is.
When your child is confident with sharing and they have a good understanding of division, they can start learning their division facts and the long division method.
When division is first introduced, children will gain an understanding of the concept of division through subtraction. They will learn all about the concept of what division is, and will acquire the basic knowledge that will help them in their following years.
Once children understand what division is , they will learn about division with single digit numbers. Simple exercises include division of 2, 5 and 10 while the more advanced ones include all numbers up to 10.
Usually in the third grade, children continue learning division with single digit numbers. Later year, they also use the division facts learned in order to solve exercises involving a two digit number and a single digit number.
In fourth grade, children usually dive deeper into division by solving problems involving a two digits number and a single digit number, a three digits number and a single digit number and a two digits number with a two digits number.
By fifth grade, children often take their division skills to the next step forward, as they learn how to solve division problems involving a two digit number with a two digit number. They also learn about factors and multiples of a number.
By sixth grade, children are usually able to solve division problems involving three or more digit numbers. They can also implement their acquired knowledge about division to negative numbers, and solve more advanced problems consisting of those.
