Learning Multiplication
Once children master place value to 100, and learn to count in steps of 2, 5, and 10, they are ready to start multiplication. When children first learn multiplication, the learning is linked to addition which they are already very familiar with, so that 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 becomes 2 x 4 (or 4 x 2). Once children understand multiplication, they are ready to start learning their tables, learning to multiply by one or two-digit numbers, and then applying their knowledge to solve problems. At the very last stage in elementary math, they are ready to start multiplying decimals.
When first introduced to multiplication, children will understand the concept of multiplication through addition. They will know, for example, that 3x5 can be written as 5+5+5. In this stage, they will acquire the basic knowledge to help them in the following years.
Next, in multiplication, children will learn about multiplication with single-digit numbers. Simple exercises include multiplication of 2, 5, and 10, while the more advanced exercises include all numbers up to 10.
Usually, in third grade, children will continue learning multiplication with single-digit numbers. By the end of the year, they should be familiar with the full 10x10 multiplication table. They will also use the multiplication facts learned to solve exercises involving a two-digit and a single-digit number.
Next, children will dive deeper into multiplication by solving problems involving a two-digit number and a single-digit number, a three-digit number and a single-digit number, and a two-digit number with a two-digit number. They will also solve multiplication problems with three single-digit numbers.
By fifth grade, children will usually be able to solve multiplication problems involving a two-digit number with a two-digit number and a multiplication problem involving a three-digit number with a two-digit number. They will also learn about factors and multiples of a number and basic exponents with powers of 10 as an example.
By sixth grade, children will often be able to solve multiplication problems involving three or more digit numbers. They will also learn about factors and multiples of a number, exponents and multiplying of negative numbers.
