Welcome to our Measurement page. Here you can find resources to help your child become more confident reading scales, understand sizes and shapes, and convert between units of measure. The subject of measurement is very relevant for everyday life, and we recommend that you encourage your child to explore different measures and play games involving them.
Learning Measurements
In first grade, children explore different measurements relating to length, weight, and volume by using non-standard units.
In second grade, children explore different measurements relating to length, weight, and volume using standard units such as the meter, kilogram, and liter or their equivalent non-metric measurements.
In third grade, children continue to explore different measurements relating to length, weight, and volume with standard units of measurement. They make basic measurements conversion, for example, between meters and centimeters. They also calculate the perimeter of a given 2D shape by measuring and adding the results.
In fourth grade, children make more advanced measurements and can evaluate the volume of a given object. Children also make conversions between different units of temperature and units of the same measure.
In fifth grade, children continue to evaluate the volume of a given object and convert it between different units of temperature. They convert between units of different systems of measurement as well, such as meters and inches.
In sixth grade, children can convert more complex measures between units from different measurement systems, such as kilometers and inches.
